The Miracle of Sinners - Trailer English

After the union of Italy, the superintendence of Italian prisons in Rome was faced with the problem associated with using prisoners in a way that was socially useful and economically viable, opting for the redevelopment of abandoned territories. As a result of this decision, the miraculous intervention of the offenders who were sentenced to hard labor in Italy's largest agricultural penal colony in Castiadas (southeast coast of Sardinia) took shape to reclaim a 6500-hectare territory that had been uninhabited for 350 years, unhealthy, swampy and malarial. On August 11, 1875, the Inspector General of Prisons of Italy, Cavaliere Eugenio Cicognani, with a handful of men and a dozen prisoners landed on the beach of Cala Sinzias in Castiadas. From that day and for 80 years, the convicts worked hard to redeem their sins, succeeding in reclaiming the entire area and transforming it into one of Sardinia's most fascinating places, while malaria inexorably decimated them. The docufilm, in describing and reconstructing the events of this exceptional feat of environmental reclamation carried out by the prisoners, brings to light the profound social aspect of the prison system of the 19th century, which was marked by re-education, redemption and reintegration into society of those who had been guilty of faults towards society itself. Initiating offenders into work succeeded in giving them a future; they learned a job, produced and earned money for their families and themselves. Once the sentence was served it was easier to reintegrate into society , knowing a trade and having accumulated money earned with dignity . In addition, the costs of sustaining the colony were covered with part of the earnings from the work of the offenders.International Title:The miracle of sinners Director and screenplay: Alessandra Usai Nunzio Caponio, Matteo Pianezzi, Mauro Racanati, Mauro Addis 2021
