Taranto - City of the Two Seas

It is an Italian municipality, capital of the province of the same name, in Apulia; it is the third largest city in southern peninsular Italy and home to one of the most important commercial ports in the Mediterranean, located on the northwestern end of the historical-geographical region called Salento, as well as on the eastern end of the coastal area called the Taranto Ionic Arc. It was founded by the Spartans in the 8th century BC under the name Taras. The city , thanks to its strategic location in the center of the gulf of the same name, the fertility of its territory and trade, became one of the most important póleis of Magna Graecia, establishing itself as a flourishing cultural, economic and military center, which gave birth to intellectuals of the caliber of Archita, Aristoxenus, Livy Andronicus, Leonidas and Heraclides of Taranto as well as athletes whose exploits became legendary throughout the Greek world, such as Icco and the so-called Athlete of Taranto.
